Where these numbers come from

Every figure is total votes cast for president — all candidates, not just the two major parties — as reported by the states and compiled by the MEDSL precinct and county releases and the tonmcg county compilation. For each state and each year the source that reconciles closest to that state's certified total was used, and the residual is shown below.

Data quality, state by state (how far each year is from the certified state total)
Known limits
  • Alaska is statewide only. Alaska reports by state house district, not by borough, and the district codes differ in all three elections, so no Alaska county-level comparison is possible. Its statewide certified totals are included in the state view.
  • Connecticut 2024 is reported on the new planning-region codes by some compilers; the county-coded release is used here so it lines up with 2016 and 2020.
  • Kansas City, Missouri reports separately from the four counties it spans, so its votes cannot be attributed to a single county in the precinct releases. Missouri therefore uses the county compilation.
  • Oglala Lakota County, SD was Shannon County in 2016 (FIPS 46113 → 46102); it is merged across years. Washington, DC is one jurisdiction, not eight wards.
  • Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Hawaii in 2016 are 1.6–3.6% below their certified totals, because those states report by town and a few towns are not assigned to a county upstream. Their 2016→2020 growth is overstated by about that much.
  • Falls Church City, Virginia has no shape in the boundary file used here, so it appears in the table but not on the map.
  • Precinct boundaries are redrawn between elections, so this compares counties, which are stable, rather than precincts, which are not.
